RES_TILE
CONTEST FOR NEW AESTHETIC BOUNDARIES IN THE PRODUCTION OF CERAMIC SLABS
ORNAMENTAL SHAPES AND INTERSPACES
RES_TILE – the amazingly obvious title means:
- Res and tile
Res – from the Latin, means the theme, the project: tile
But
- restile = restyle – the designing – based on previously existing – once more, a new interpretation.
Porcelain stoneware has the best values on resistance such as frost, impact, abrasion, to chemicals, etc. The precision of the form, the sides, the rectangularity, the flatness of the surface is excellent.
With newest production methods each surface structure and optic appearance is possible, even natural materials such as stones, woods, fabrics, cork, leather etc. can – even in natural diversity – be appropriated and re_produced.
And Porcelain stoneware is even natural and sustainable.
“When the highest expectations are being surpassed, then the time has come for a new level.” Sergei Tchoban
Naturalness, vividness, vitality, originality and quaintness are the qualities that are required.
How could it be reached?
There are the asymmetries, irregularities, failings and missteps which make something adorable. High civilizations have known this and have transformed it in ornaments.
As an artist I cultivate the moment of inspiration in the playfully handling of the material. For the Res_tile I used clay in the form of prepared slabs, a quite similar material as porcelain stoneware.
Out of these experimental results, I have selected two examples:
- CUSCINO
with a pillow you feel at home
See Power Point presentation, pages 2 – 7
a square format (dimensions e.g. of 5 x 5, 10 x 10, 15 x 15, 30 x 30 cm etc.)
- MADELEINE
if you perceive it, your memories come back (after Marcel Proust)
See Power Point presentation, pages 9 – 15
A rectangle format – width to length 1 : 2 (dimensions e.g.: 3,75 x 7,5 /
7,5 x 15 / 15 x 30 / 30 x 45 cm etc.)
Both forms I first created and developed in a natural and archaic handling.
They are characterised by rounded angles and edges and a plastic 3 dimensional surface with a special texture.
To use them for the industrial production I tested and developed the shape and colours in a hybrid digital mode. For the shape I traced back this natural handcraft in their geometrical basics.
The fascinating results are ornamental forms of tiles and ornamental shaped interspaces.
And to intensify the lively impression the whole surface is rounded with a big radius.
In a next step the sizes have to be thought about and the exact modulating of the shape in matching with the sizes. For large formats perhaps it is more rational to emboss the relief pattern and have also the smaller single formats.
Another possibility is the combination with an existing Mirage collection, for example with “CEMENTI” in material and colours, so that you can combine the rectangular with the ornamental, and the large with the small.
On colours anything more is possible – some proposals are attached.
